Kinesiology taping is a versatile therapeutic technique used to support injured muscles and joints, reduce pain and facilitate rehabilitation — without restricting normal movement. At Sloane Square Chiropractors in Chelsea, we incorporate kinesiology taping into our treatment plans as a highly effective adjunct to chiropractic care.
What Is Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology tape is an elastic, adhesive tape with properties similar to human skin. Unlike rigid sports strapping tape, kinesiology tape allows full range of motion and can be worn continuously for several days, including during sport, exercise and showering. It was developed in the 1970s by Japanese chiropractor Dr Kenzo Kase and is now widely used in sports medicine and rehabilitation worldwide.
How Does Kinesiology Tape Work?
When applied to the skin, kinesiology tape creates a gentle lifting effect on the superficial layers of tissue. This is thought to:
- Reduce pressure on pain receptors in the skin and underlying tissue
- Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage
- Facilitate or inhibit muscle activity depending on the application technique
- Support joints without restricting movement
- Improve proprioception — the body’s awareness of joint position
Conditions We Use Kinesiology Taping For
Sports Injuries
Kinesiology taping is widely used in elite and recreational sport for ankle sprains, knee injuries, hamstring and calf strains, shoulder problems and lower back pain. It provides support and reduces pain during the return-to-sport phase of rehabilitation.
Neck and Shoulder Pain
Applied to the upper trapezius and cervical musculature to reduce muscular tension and support postural correction during treatment.
Lower Back Pain
Lumbar kinesiology taping can reduce pain and provide functional support during daily activities and exercise.
Knee Pain
Patellar taping techniques are effective for patellofemoral pain syndrome and patellar tendinopathy, correcting abnormal patellar tracking and reducing pain.
Postural Support
Kinesiology tape can be applied to facilitate correct postural alignment and provide proprioceptive feedback for patients working to correct postural problems.
What to Expect
Your chiropractor will apply the tape in a specific pattern depending on your condition and treatment goals. The tape can be worn for 3-5 days before reapplication is needed. It is water-resistant and can be worn during exercise and showering.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kinesiology Taping
Does kinesiology taping really work?
Clinical evidence for kinesiology taping continues to grow. A 2018 systematic review in the Journal of Physiotherapy found moderate evidence for its effectiveness in reducing pain in musculoskeletal conditions. It is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan alongside chiropractic manipulation and exercise rehabilitation.
Will the tape irritate my skin?
Kinesiology tape is hypoallergenic and suitable for most skin types. A small number of patients with very sensitive skin may experience mild irritation. If you have a history of skin sensitivity, please inform your chiropractor before application.
